Bylaws Amendment

5/16/2023 9:49 am

During the membership meeting on May 31st, membership will vote on the following bylaws amendment:

Bylaws for Virginia State PTA Local Units and/or Councils

Clermont Elementary School PTA recommends amending these bylaws as follows:

Article: 6 Section: 5

Current Section wording:

Officers shall serve for a term of one (1) year(s) or until their successors are elected. No person shall hold more than one (1) elected office at a time on this local unit board. No local unit officer shall serve more than two (2) consecutive terms, not to exceed four (4) years, in the same office. Officers who have served in an office for more than one-half (1/2) of a full term shall be deemed to have served a full term in such office.

Amendment to read:

Officers shall serve for a term of one (1) year(s) or until their successors are elected. No person shall hold more than one (1) elected office at a time on this local unit board. No local unit officer shall serve more than four (4) consecutive terms in the same office. Officers who have served in an office for more than one-half (1/2) of a full term shall be deemed to have served a full term in such office. An exception to this rule can be made should there be no candidates willing and available to fill a position, and the current officer is willing to stay in the role for the following year.

Rationale:

Virginia PTA state bylaws allow for officers to serve up to 4 consecutive terms in the same role, if elected. We have updated this state allowance into our current bylaws.  In addition, we have added an exception to the term limit in the case where there are no candidates willing to fill the role, and the current candidate is willing to stay.  If there is a choice between having a position vacant or having a former officer remain, we believe it is in the best interest of the PTA to have the position be filled.  This will only be put into place when the nominating committee has exhausted all options and truly feels they are unable to fill the role with another volunteer.
